Afghan Carpet Exports Exceed $8 Million in Six Months, Boosted by Demand in Key Markets

Afghanistan’s carpet industry is seeing renewed growth, with exports surpassing $8 million in the first six months of the current solar year. This export milestone underscores the global demand for Afghan carpets, known for their intricate designs and quality craftsmanship.

Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, announced that over 2.3 million kilograms of Afghan carpets, valued at $8.7 million, were exported to markets including Pakistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Italy, the U.S., India, and China. The Ministry is now intensifying efforts to provide further support and facilities to expand exports.

Industry leaders, such as Noor Ahmad Noori, head of the Union of Carpet Producers and Exporters, emphasize Afghan carpets’ unique global appeal. “Afghan carpets hold a distinct position in the market that no other carpets can replicate,” Noori stated, highlighting the craftsmanship rooted in provinces like Jawzjan, Balkh, Faryab, and Sar-e Pol.

Carpet sellers advocate for more exhibitions both domestically and internationally to further boost demand. Kambir, an Afghan carpet seller, emphasized the need for air corridor access to ease carpet exports to the U.S., Europe, and Australia, urging authorities to simplify the visa process for traders and reopen air corridors to key international markets.

While Afghan carpets enjoy a strong position, the industry faces challenges. Iranian media recently reported concerns from Iran’s Commission for Arts and Handicrafts about the influx of Afghan carpets into the Iranian market due to smuggling. In response, Afghan carpet traders are calling for enhanced legal trade channels to protect the Afghan market and ensure continued growth.

As Afghan carpet producers and exporters push for greater international presence, industry representatives express optimism that expanded participation in trade fairs and improved logistics will open new avenues, helping Afghan carpets maintain their prestigious position in global markets.
