Math Meets Rug Magic in Helena Rohner's Weave Collection for GAN

Helena Rohner’s new Weave collection for GAN brings ancient weaving techniques into the modern era, blending mathematical precision with artistic design. The collection reimagines traditional loom-based patterns, drawing inspiration from classic fabrics like twill, satin, and jacquard, and magnifying them to showcase their intricate details.

The Weave collection, made from 100% wool, features two distinct styles: Meeting Point and Space Hopper. Both designs incorporate a diamond pattern inspired by the ancient twill weave, a technique dating back to the 4th millennium BCE. This pattern not only adds an ornamental touch but also connects the rugs to the deep history of textile production, a foundational element of civilization.

Rohner and the artisans at GAN have skillfully integrated various weaving patterns into single, cohesive pieces, creating a tapestry that seamlessly combines different textures and shadows, reminiscent of modern art. Each rug is available in two color palettes—Orange and Blue—offering warm and cool tones that enhance the interplay of light and texture.

“It is important in design to listen, not only to the material but also to the hands that create the piece,” says Rohner, emphasizing the collaboration between designer and artisan. Her multidisciplinary background in jewelry design, where she often blends unconventional materials, informs her approach to creating these timeless yet contemporary rugs.

GAN Rugs, known for their commitment to handmade luxury, ensure that their collaboration with skilled Indian artisans supports local economic development and preserves traditional weaving techniques. Using natural fibers like wool and jute, along with recycled materials, GAN emphasizes sustainability at every stage of production, making the Weave collection both an artistic and ethical choice for modern interiors.
