Thilo Horstmann on Domotex 2026: Adapting to Industry Needs with a New Vision

Thilo Horstmann, Project Director at Domotex Hannover, shares insights into the evolution of the event and its strategic changes for 2026. With over 15 years at Domotex, he has witnessed shifts in the flooring and carpet industry, especially post-pandemic. In this interview, he discusses Domotex’s move to a biennial format, the expansion into 3D wall and ceiling coverings, and how the event remains a key global platform despite market challenges. He also offers advice for exhibitors on choosing the right trade fair based on their business goals and market focus.

Q: You’ve been with Domotex for over 15 years. Can you share your journey from project manager to project director at Domotex Hannover?

Thilo Horstmann: Absolutely. I started as a project manager for the handmade carpet exhibition in Hanover and gradually took on more responsibilities. Now, as the project director for the wholesale segment at Domotex Hannover, I oversee the event’s strategic direction, ensuring it remains a key platform for the flooring and carpet industry.

Q: The pandemic significantly impacted trade fairs. How did it affect Domotex?

Thilo Horstmann: The last major edition before the pandemic was in 2020. During the lockdowns, many homeowners and companies completed renovations, reducing demand in the following years. When Domotex restarted, it was on a smaller scale, and now, with a recession in Europe and fewer new construction projects, the market remains challenging.

Q: What changes are planned for Domotex 2026 to address these challenges?

Thilo Horstmann: To adapt, we’ve shifted Domotex to a biennial format, as innovation in the industry doesn’t progress rapidly. Starting in 2026, Domotex will be held every even year, aligning better with market needs. Additionally, we’re expanding the product scope to include 3D wall and ceiling coverings, making Domotex a comprehensive event for interior finishing.

Q: How does Domotex compare with other industry trade fairs?

Thilo Horstmann: In flooring, we align with BAU Munich, which runs in odd years, while Domotex takes place in even years. For carpets, the industry doesn’t require constant exhibitions; a two-year innovation cycle makes more sense. Currently, the carpet industry is fragmented across multiple trade fairs, but Domotex remains the strongest international platform for networking and business.

Q: What should exhibitors consider when choosing trade fairs?

Thilo Horstmann: Exhibitors need to assess their goals. Domotex Hannover attracts global buyers, making it ideal for those seeking international exposure. Meanwhile, Domotex Dubai focuses on the Middle East, and Domotex Shanghai caters to the Asian market. Companies should determine whether they need regional or worldwide outreach before selecting the right event.

Q: In your view, why is Domotex Hannover crucial for the industry?

Thilo Horstmann: Domotex is a globally recognized brand, offering a central meeting point for the flooring and carpet industry. By maintaining a strong, focused event every two years, we ensure exhibitors and visitors get the best opportunities for business, networking, and innovation.
