Turkey Strengthens Its Position in the Global Carpet Market with $2.8 Billion in Exports

The Istanbul Carpet Exporters’ Association (IHIB) has announced the winners of the 17th National Carpet Design Competition, an event that highlights Turkey’s strong presence in the global carpet industry. During the ceremony, where sector representatives contributing to 2023 carpet exports were also recognized, Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TIM) President Mustafa Gültepe emphasized Turkey’s growing influence in the sector, stating:

“We have a voice in the world carpet market with exports worth $2.8 billion. To expand this success, we must integrate production with design and innovation.”

Celebrating Design and Export Excellence

The top honor in the National Carpet Design Competition went to İnan Burhanlı, followed by Esma Deniz in second place and Yaren İleri in third. In addition, 10 companies were awarded in four key categories: Machine-Woven Carpet, Tufting Carpet, Velvet Carpet, and Prayer Rug & Hand-Made Rug.

The IHIB Special Award was presented to Mine Gökbuket Erbek, who dedicated her award to Turkish women weavers, while the Carpetmaker of the Year Special Award was given to Erhan Ör, the founder of Hereke carpets.

The Cultural and Economic Significance of Carpets

Istanbul Deputy Governor Cengiz Karabulut highlighted the deep cultural heritage of Turkish carpets, stating:

“Every stitch holds history, every pattern tells a story. These designs are not just textiles; they are works of art that showcase our cultural richness to the world.”

Mustafa Gültepe also underlined the importance of Turkey’s long-standing expertise in carpets, noting:

“With 2,500 years of history, Turks are among the nations that understand carpets best. Turkey accounts for 16.4% of global carpet exports, and in the January–November 2023 period, our exports increased by 5%.”

Turkey Leads in Machine-Woven Carpets

IHIB Chairman Ahmet Hayri Diler expressed pride in Turkey’s achievements, stating:

“Today, Turkey ranks second in total carpet exports worldwide and first in machine-woven carpets. This success is built on our sector’s strong infrastructure, innovative vision, and commitment to preserving our cultural values.”

He emphasized that value-added exports—by blending design, technology, and craftsmanship—are essential not only for economic success but also for promoting Turkish cultural heritage globally.
