Iran has strengthened the global recognition of its handmade carpet industry with the international registration of 10 new carpet-producing regions, further highlighting the country’s rich weaving heritage and geographical diversity.
According to Mohammad Veysian, Deputy Head of the National Carpet Center of Iran, the registrations were completed through efforts to secure geographical indication (GI) protection for Iranian handmade carpets with the World Intellectual Property Organization.
The latest registrations bring the total number of internationally recognized Iranian handmade carpet regions to 45 areas across 23 provinces, reinforcing Iran’s position as one of the world’s most important centers of handmade carpet production.
In addition to the international registrations, 48 carpet-producing regions have also been officially registered at the national level, providing further protection for the authenticity and cultural identity of Iranian carpet designs.
Strengthening Global Recognition of Iranian Carpets
Geographical indication registration helps protect the reputation, origin, and unique characteristics of traditional products linked to specific regions. For Iran’s carpet sector, these registrations are expected to enhance international recognition and support efforts to preserve centuries-old weaving traditions.
Iranian handmade carpets remain among the country’s most iconic cultural and export products, renowned worldwide for their craftsmanship, artistic value, and regional diversity.
Carpet Exports Reach 61 Countries
Commenting on export performance, Veysian stated that according to customs statistics for the first ten months of 2025, Iran exported approximately 1,737 tons of handmade carpets valued at $30.4 million.
Despite ongoing challenges facing the sector, Iranian handmade carpets continue to find buyers around the world and are currently exported to 61 countries.
However, industry officials believe that current export figures remain significantly below the industry’s true capacity and historical performance.
Untapped Potential Remains Significant
The Iranian handmade carpet industry has long been regarded as one of the country’s most valuable cultural and economic assets. Industry stakeholders argue that stronger international marketing, easier access to global markets, and support for artisans could help unlock substantial growth opportunities.
With additional geographical indications now recognized internationally, industry experts expect greater protection for regional carpet identities and improved opportunities to promote authentic Iranian handmade carpets in global markets.
The latest registrations represent another step toward preserving Iran’s carpet heritage while enhancing the international competitiveness of one of the country’s most renowned traditional industries.
