Kenya Emerging as a Strategic Hub for Africa’s Flooring Industry: Turkish Delegation Reports Strong Business Potential

By MENA Covering Editorial Desk

Kenya, East and Central Africa’s largest economy, is rapidly gaining attention as a strategic gateway for the continent’s flooring and surface materials industry. A recent high-profile trade mission by leading Turkish natural stone exporters has highlighted the country’s potential not only for natural stone but for the broader flooring and interior surfaces sector, from tiles and ceramics to carpets, vinyl, and engineered wood.

Organized by the Aegean Mineral Exporters’ Association (EMİB), the Kenya Natural Stone Sectoral Trade Mission took place from July 28 to August 1, 2025, bringing together 10 Turkish companies with 48 importers from Kenya and neighboring countries including Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania. Over the course of the event, 232 B2B meetings were held, with participants estimating that at least 30% will translate into short- or medium-term export agreements.

Direct Market Access for Flooring Products

Until now, much of Turkey’s natural stone exports to Kenya had been routed indirectly through third countries such as the UK, Portugal, and France. This mission marked a strategic shift, enabling direct contact with local buyers. Beyond natural stone, the networking and market insights gained during the event are expected to open opportunities for other flooring segments—particularly in response to Kenya’s growing urbanization, infrastructure development, and middle-class housing demand.

The delegation, supported by Turkey’s Ministry of Trade and coordinated with local partner Karibu Company, also visited prominent Kenyan importers and distributors such as Natural Stone Kenya, Stone Arts, and Tile & Carpet Centre. These visits provided first-hand knowledge of product specifications, size preferences, and color trends in the market—critical data for suppliers in all flooring categories.

Industry Voices: Opportunity Across the Flooring Spectrum

Participants reported high levels of interest not only in natural stone but in complementary flooring solutions.

“Kenya’s construction and infrastructure investments create an environment where high-quality flooring materials—whether stone, ceramic, or resilient products—can thrive. For exporters, this is a market that rewards quality, variety, and strategic relationships,” noted Mehmet Şen, Şenler Marble.

“The African market is still relatively untapped for flooring products. With sustained focus, we can significantly increase exports—not just in stone, but in a full range of surface materials,” added Murat Çalbay, TT Stone.

Several companies, including Alimoğlu Marble Granite and Çobanlar Group, emphasized that their engagement in Kenya is part of a broader African strategy, with upcoming stops in South Africa and Nigeria planned under EMİB’s new URGE Project.

Kenya’s Role in Africa’s Flooring Future

Kenya’s position as a logistics and trade hub, combined with its ongoing urban expansion, makes it a critical entry point for flooring manufacturers targeting Africa. With demand rising for both residential and commercial projects, the market is increasingly receptive to a wide spectrum of flooring solutions—from premium natural stone to cost-efficient laminate, carpet tiles, and vinyl.

The mission’s success demonstrates the importance of direct market engagement and localized product strategies for exporters. As Africa’s flooring industry gains global attention, Kenya’s role as a bridge between East Africa and international suppliers is set to grow.

For the flooring sector’s stakeholders across the MENA region and beyond, the message is clear: Africa—starting with Kenya—is ready for business.
