Uzbekistan Strengthens Regional Carpet Trade, Kyrgyzstan Emerges as Top Importer in 2025

According to the latest data released by the Uzbekistan National Statistics Committee, the country’s carpet export sector witnessed significant momentum during the first half of 2025, with neighboring Kyrgyzstan becoming the leading importer of Uzbek carpets.

Between January and June 2025, Uzbekistan exported a total of 3.6 million square meters of carpets valued at $10.8 million USD. Among the destinations, Kyrgyzstan stood out by importing 1.086 million square meters, reaffirming its role as a key trading partner in the region.

This export performance not only highlights Uzbekistan’s rising production capacity but also strengthens its position as a pivotal player in the Central Asian textile and flooring industry.

Top 5 Importers of Uzbek Carpets (Jan–June 2025):

  • Kyrgyzstan – 1.086 million m²
  • Azerbaijan – 969,000 m²
  • Afghanistan – 725,000 m²
  • Russia – 429,000 m²
  • Kazakhstan – 334,000 m²

Other countries accounted for an additional 61,000 m², reflecting Uzbekistan’s growing export diversification beyond Central Asia.

A Sign of Industrial Maturity

The surge in demand for Uzbek-made carpets is largely attributed to enhanced production capabilities, improved quality standards, and competitive pricing in international markets. The carpet sector is becoming a cornerstone of the country’s non-oil export economy, supported by government initiatives aimed at boosting local manufacturing and expanding regional trade routes.

Focus on Regional Integration

The strong trade ties with neighboring nations such as Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, and Afghanistan align with Uzbekistan’s strategic efforts to foster economic integration across Central Asia and the CIS. With infrastructural improvements and trade facilitation mechanisms underway, the country is well-positioned to expand its reach into larger markets, including Russia and Europe.

Industry experts view this as a pivotal moment for Uzbek carpet manufacturers, who are gaining increased visibility in regional markets. The sector’s forward trajectory is expected to continue, especially with rising interest from emerging economies and growing appreciation for Central Asian craftsmanship in home furnishings.

About Uzbekistan’s Carpet Industry

Uzbekistan’s carpet industry combines traditional designs with modern production techniques, offering a diverse range of machine-made and handmade products. With exports steadily increasing, the industry plays a vital role in the country’s broader strategy to diversify its economy and promote value-added textile exports.
