Every summer, the fields of Antalya’s Döşemealtı district are transformed into vibrant seas of color, as thousands of handwoven carpets and kilims are laid out under the sun. These open-air “carpet fields” are not only a spectacular visual attraction but also serve a vital role in enhancing the value of Turkey’s traditional handmade rugs on the global stage.
This age-old practice, known locally as “carpet sunning,” is both scientific and cultural. The sun naturally softens the colors and purifies the wool using UV rays—eliminating microorganisms and excess chemical residues from organic dyes. The result is a pastel-toned, vintage aesthetic that is in high demand in global markets from the United States and Japan to Europe and Australia.
“We use 100% organic wool and natural dyes,” explains Halil Börekci, who has been involved in the sunning and exporting of carpets since 1976. “By exposing the carpets to sunlight over the summer months, we reduce their chemical load and soften their tones. Vintage and faded styles are especially popular abroad, and this process boosts their appeal and value significantly.”
Tradition Meets Global Trade
Once placed in the fields, the carpets are turned regularly to ensure even exposure. By the end of the season, they are carefully collected, prepared, and exported worldwide. This careful balance of tradition, sustainability, and commerce has turned Döşemealtı into not just a textile processing site, but a global hub for the vintage carpet trade.
“We ship to nearly every corner of the globe,” adds Börekci. “Our biggest clients are in the U.S., Japan, Australia, South America, and Europe. Each piece is handmade, organic, and uniquely Turkish.”
A Cultural Tourism Attraction
Beyond commerce, Antalya’s carpet fields have also become a surprise favorite among tourists and social media influencers. Visitors from around the world, particularly photography enthusiasts, flock to Döşemealtı to capture the stunning visuals of endless, color-drenched textile fields.
These sun-soaked carpets, arranged like patchwork mosaics, have transformed local fields into seasonal art installations—blending craftsmanship with cultural heritage and modern digital storytelling. The resulting images shared online have added yet another dimension to the region’s appeal, reinforcing Antalya as not only a tourism hotspot but also a center for living craft traditions.
From Wool to the World
Through this traditional, chemical-free sun-curing process, Döşemealtı carpets undergo a physical and visual metamorphosis that links Turkey’s deep artisanal heritage with modern market trends in home décor and design. As sustainability, slow fashion, and authenticity continue to shape global consumer behavior, handmade carpets from these sunlit fields are finding pride of place in homes around the world.
