Afghanistan Carpet Exports Surpass 760,000 Square Meters This Year

Afghanistan has exported more than 760,000 square meters of handmade carpets to international markets so far this year, reflecting continued growth in one of the country’s most important traditional industries, according to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs.

Officials say the increase highlights the carpet sector’s growing contribution to employment, exports and economic development.

Handmade Carpet Industry Supports Nearly One Million Jobs

According to the government, Afghanistan’s handmade carpet industry provides direct and indirect employment for nearly one million people, making it one of the country’s largest labor-intensive industries.

The sector remains a key source of non-traditional exports and continues to play an important role in supporting rural livelihoods and preserving Afghanistan’s long-standing carpet weaving heritage.

Europe and Middle East Remain Key Export Markets

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs said the majority of Afghanistan’s handmade carpets are exported to Europe and the Middle East, where demand for traditional Afghan carpets remains strong.

Officials noted that export volumes have increased compared with previous years, reflecting the resilience of the industry despite ongoing economic challenges.

Carpet Industry Drives Non-Traditional Exports

The government believes the growth in handmade carpet exports demonstrates the sector’s potential to strengthen Afghanistan’s non-traditional export portfolio while generating employment and supporting economic recovery.
As one of Afghanistan’s most recognized traditional products, handmade carpets continue to contribute to foreign exchange earnings and reinforce the country’s position in international carpet markets.
