Mr. Zeynal Abidin Kaplan, President of the Southeastern Anatolia Carpet Exporters’ Association, emphasized that the carpet sector remains the flagship of Gaziantep’s economy, with the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq ranking as the top three export markets.
The Southeastern Anatolia Carpet Exporters’ Association held its annual general assembly meeting for 2024, attended by industry leaders and senior representatives from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), the Pulses and Oil Seeds Exporters Association, and other regional trade associations.
During the meeting, the 2024 activity reports, financial statements, and audit board reports were unanimously approved, along with the 2025 budget and work plan.
In his address, President Kaplan stated:
“Carpet is a valuable industry for our region. Every thread and color represents years of craftsmanship and dedication. Our priority is to maintain our competitive edge and continue leading the global market.”
He also highlighted the global challenges impacting all industries, stating that strengthening cooperation, expanding sectoral consultations, and continuously seeking new markets will be key strategies to navigate this period successfully.
Export Highlights for 2024
According to Mr. Kaplan, Turkey’s total carpet exports in 2024 increased by 4.2% compared to 2023, reaching USD 2.87 billion. The Southeastern Anatolia region alone contributed USD 1.95 billion, marking a 5% rise and accounting for 67.9% of Turkey’s total carpet exports.
Product-wise:
- 86.2% of the exports were machine-made carpets,
- 12.7% tufted carpets,
- The remainder consisted of hand-made rugs and kilims.
Country-wise:
- USA remained the top destination with USD 566 million in exports (29.1% share),
- Followed by Saudi Arabia with USD 205 million (10.6%),
- And Iraq with USD 200 million (10.3%).
A Call for Innovation and Resilience
President Kaplan emphasized that despite global uncertainties, the Gaziantep carpet industry remains resilient due to its strong production capacity, employment, and export performance. He reaffirmed the sector’s commitment to continuous innovation, adaptation, and collaboration with international markets.
