Iran’s Handwoven Carpet and Gabbeh Exports Reach $41.7 Million in 2024

Iran’s handwoven carpet and gabbeh exports reached a value of $41.7 million in the current Persian calendar year 2024, marking a 3% increase compared to the same period last year. The news was announced by Arezu Ghanioon, Deputy Director of the Customs Statistics and Data Processing Office at the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

According to IRICA’s report, this export figure reflects both the enduring global demand for Iranian handwoven rugs and the resilience of the country’s traditional carpet industry, despite economic and logistical challenges.

The report highlights that the top four destinations for Iranian handwoven carpets and gabbeh exports were Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and China. These countries continue to show strong appreciation for the craftsmanship, design, and cultural value embedded in Iranian carpet weaving traditions.

Iran’s handwoven carpet industry is not only a cultural emblem but also a significant contributor to non-oil exports. The slight increase in export value is seen as a positive indicator of international market interest, particularly in premium segments such as gabbehs and intricate hand-knotted carpets.

As Iran continues to explore new markets and streamline its trade strategies, exhibitions, direct-to-consumer exports, and greater digital presence are expected to play a growing role in enhancing the visibility of Iranian carpets worldwide.
