In celebration of the upcoming Turkmen Carpet Festival, Turkmenistan is honoring the country’s skilled artisans who continue the revered tradition of handmade carpet weaving, passed down through generations.
The “Syrlar siňen nepislik” competition, held among leading carpet weavers from the velayats, Ashgabat, and the city of Arkadag, recently concluded with an award ceremony at the National Museum of Turkmen Carpet. The contest aimed to spotlight the artistry and heritage embodied in each handcrafted carpet.
The main prize was awarded to Nurjemal Amangeldiyeva and Bakhargul Glydzhova, talented weavers from the Baherden Art Carpet Weaving Enterprise under the State Association “Türkmenhaly” in Ahal velayat. According to the jury, their works demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship and a deep dedication to Turkmenistan’s centuries-old weaving traditions.
An expansive exhibition of contest entries was also held at the museum, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the intricate world of carpet making. Participating craftswomen showcased their techniques in wool spinning, natural dyeing, and design inspiration, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the cultural and artistic significance of each piece.
The event was jointly organized by the State Association “Türkmenhaly”, the National Center of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan, and the Women’s Union. Winners and finalists received valuable gifts on behalf of the President of Turkmenistan, underscoring the nation’s recognition and pride in its cultural artisans.
Looking ahead, on May 25, the 25th meeting of the World Association of Connoisseurs of Turkmen Carpet will convene at the same museum. The gathering is set to welcome foreign scholars, collectors, and carpet experts to engage in cultural exchange and share knowledge on the global significance of Turkmen carpet weaving. An accompanying exhibition will feature carpets and textile art, offering a platform for showcasing the enduring legacy and innovation within this iconic craft.
