India’s Carpet Market Eyes $5.5 Billion by 2033

India’s carpet industry is witnessing a strong growth trajectory, with the market projected to reach USD 5.51 billion by 2033, up from USD 2.93 billion in 2024, according to recent estimates. This surge represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7% from 2025 to 2033, driven by factors such as rising digital engagement, demand for personalized design, and a growing commitment to sustainability.

Digitalization Fuels Global Reach

The rise of e-commerce platforms and digital marketing is reshaping India’s carpet landscape. Online sales and virtual showrooms are offering consumers—both domestic and global—unprecedented access to India’s vast range of handwoven and machine-made carpets. Brands like Jaipur Rugs are leading the way with digital campaigns like Court of Carpets, launched in October 2024 and endorsed by tennis star Rohan Bopanna, which celebrate Indian craftsmanship and the work of over 40,000 artisans.

Customization and Luxury Redefine Product Offerings

India’s carpet makers are responding to growing consumer interest in customized and designer carpets. The January 2025 launch of Luxurify—a luxury hand-knotted carpet collection by RKS Carpets—showcases how traditional craftsmanship can be elevated with the help of contemporary influences. Featuring Indian supermodels and over 10,000 artisans, the collection blends modern and traditional aesthetics for high-end homes and offices.

A Global Leader in Handmade Carpets

India remains the largest exporter of handmade carpets, commanding nearly 40% of the global market share. In FY23, India’s handmade carpet exports stood at USD 1.36 billion, growing at a CAGR of 7% since FY18. Major export markets include the United States, Germany, and the UK. Between April and June 2024 alone, India exported USD 214.84 million worth of carpets to the U.S.

Sustainability: The Future of Indian Carpets

Sustainable practices are reshaping the Indian carpet market. Manufacturers are increasingly adopting natural fibers like wool, jute, and organic cotton while embracing eco-friendly certifications to meet rising global expectations, especially in Europe and North America. According to IBEF, India exported USD 1.34 billion worth of wool carpets in FY24, representing 80% of its total wool exports.

Brands such as Hands Carpets, Nodana, and Aquafil are integrating upcycling and green technologies into their operations. Hands’ KNOTION collection and Nodana’s eco-conscious debut reflect the shift toward low-impact, high-craft luxury.

Government and CEPC Support

The Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) and government-backed schemes are playing a pivotal role in promoting exports, providing artisan training, and enabling Indian carpet brands to reach wider global audiences through international trade fairs and online platforms.

Competitive Landscape and Market Outlook

The Indian carpet market is highly fragmented, comprising heritage brands, luxury designers, and emerging digital-native startups. Regions such as Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Bhadohi (Uttar Pradesh) continue to be key manufacturing hubs. The market is also witnessing increased competition from international brands, especially in synthetic and tufted carpets.

Recent product launches such as ECONYL® Bespoke Collection by Aquafil Group (Nov 2024) and Stepwells rug collection by Shalini Misra (March 2024) are examples of how Indian and international players are tapping into India’s design depth and production capabilities.
