International architecture and design studio Snøhetta has partnered with Ege Carpets to launch the MATTER Collection, a groundbreaking series of flat-woven carpets that merge algorithmic design with Scandinavian craftsmanship.
The collection applies generative coding to create carpets that are one-of-a-kind, with each design woven as a unique visual landscape from recycled yarns. “From code to pixel, pixel to thread, and thread to carpet, each step was an exploration of how micro-scale decisions could shape the overall feel of a space,” explained Francesca Giulia Poli, project lead at Snøhetta.
A Fusion of Digital and Craft
Crafted using Ege’s advanced flatweave technology, the MATTER Collection resists traditional repetition by embracing randomness and natural unpredictability. Available in two palettes—muted beige and gray tones, or vibrant blues and greens—the carpets deliver versatility while ensuring visual cohesion. Each piece subtly shifts in pattern as the viewer moves through the room, creating a dynamic spatial experience.

Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability is integral to the collection, with materials selected for durability and minimal waste. The use of recycled yarns reflects the industry’s growing commitment to responsible design and circular manufacturing practices.
Industry Impact
The MATTER Collection represents several emerging trends in design and textiles:
- Algorithmic Design Aesthetics: Harnessing randomness to challenge conventional mass production.
- Sustainable Soft Furnishings: Prioritizing recycled materials and waste-minimizing processes.
- Dynamic Spatial Interactions: Carpets that transform perception as users engage with the space.
For the home textiles and interior design sectors, the collaboration demonstrates how technology and artistry can converge to create responsible, innovative, and immersive products.
