Obeetee Unveils ‘Silk Route’ Collection: A Tribute to the Ancient Trade Network Through Contemporary Carpet Design

Obeetee, one of India’s oldest and most respected handmade carpet manufacturers, has launched a new collection titled The Silk Route, drawing deep inspiration from the legendary trade paths that once connected East and West. The 105-year-old brand’s latest offering is a celebration of craft, culture, and heritage—reimagined for today’s homes.

A Tapestry of Cultures from the Silk Road

The Silk Route collection pays homage to the cultural and artistic exchanges that once flourished along the Silk Road—an ancient network of trade routes that stretched from China to the Mediterranean. These corridors were more than just commercial arteries; they were melting pots of art, belief systems, and craftsmanship, influencing civilizations across Central Asia, Persia, India, and beyond.

Obeetee’s new collection masterfully combines design motifs and weaving traditions from Persian, Tibetan, Mughal, and Ladakhi cultures. Each hand-knotted carpet showcases a sophisticated blend of Persian floral artistry, Tibetan geometric symbolism, and Mughal opulence, all reinterpreted with Obeetee’s signature contemporary aesthetic. The result is a versatile line of floor art that fits beautifully into modern interiors while echoing ancient craftsmanship.

Spotlight on Ladakh: Reviving a Hidden Textile Heritage

Ladakh, a region historically positioned along key Silk Road routes, plays a central role in this collection. Known for its syncretic culture influenced by Indian, Tibetan, and Central Asian caravans, Ladakh’s textile heritage remains largely underrepresented on the global stage.
To bring that heritage to the forefront, Obeetee has launched a community-driven initiative in the region. In partnership with a government-supported program, the company hosted an intensive 30-day training workshop in Ladakh, where 50 local women were introduced to advanced Tibetan knotting techniques under the guidance of Obeetee’s master weavers. The effort not only upskills local artisans but also strengthens the region’s economic fabric by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

“We wanted to honour the spirit of exchange that shaped civilizations, while offering designs that feel at home in today’s evolving spaces,” said Angelique Dhama, CEO of Obeetee Pvt. Ltd. “This collection showcases the artistry of our weavers and extends meaningful opportunities to the artisans of Ladakh.”

Craft Meets Legacy

Each rug in the Silk Route collection is a physical expression of cultural convergence—crafted from premium wool, infused with historical meaning, and brought to life through labor-intensive hand-knotting processes. In every pattern lies a story of spiritual geometry, cross-cultural symbolism, and collective human memory.

The launch of this collection underscores Obeetee’s ongoing commitment to sustainable luxury, artisan empowerment, and cultural preservation. As consumers increasingly seek décor that carries emotional resonance and historical value, The Silk Route emerges as a timely and meaningful offering.

Through this initiative, Obeetee not only bridges design across eras and geographies but also walks the talk—reviving the spirit of the Silk Road through collaboration, craftsmanship, and community.
