Zollanvari: Weaving Heritage into Contemporary Luxury

With a legacy that spans generations and a deep connection to Iran’s rich nomadic traditions, Zollanvari has emerged as one of the most respected names in the world of handmade carpets. Renowned globally for their bold Gabbeh creations and innovative interpretations of tribal artistry, the company continues to push boundaries while remaining rooted in authenticity.

In this exclusive interview with MenaCovering News, the Zollanvari team offers a profound insight into their design philosophy, the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, and their commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation. From collaborations with international designers to empowering weavers in remote communities, Zollanvari exemplifies how a centuries-old craft can evolve into a contemporary global brand — without losing its soul.

1. Zollanvari has a long-standing heritage in Persian carpet weaving. How do you balance tradition with innovation in your design and production processes?

“At Zollanvari, our legacy isn’t just woven into our carpets; it’s the very warp and weft of our being. We stand on the shoulders of generations of nomadic artisans, their ancient techniques and the secrets of natural dyes flowing through our work like the mountain streams of their homeland. Yet, we believe tradition thrives through evolution.

That’s why we seek out invigorating collaborations, like our partnership with the visionary minds at SoFarSoNear in Milan. Together, we explore the exhilarating edges of form, the serene beauty of minimalism, and palettes that sing with a contemporary vibrancy. The result? Collections that whisper tales of the past in a distinctly modern voice – timeless soul meeting today’s design spirit.”

2. Your Gabbeh and tribal carpets are widely admired for their artistic uniqueness. What is the creative process behind developing such distinctive collections?

“Every Zollanvari carpet carries a heartbeat, a story waiting to unfold beneath your feet. Sometimes, it’s a vibrant echo of ancestral tribal motifs, reimagined with a fresh perspective. Other times, it’s a bold, abstract vision sparked by the lines of modern architecture, the poetry of the natural world, or the compelling narratives of contemporary art.

Our design atelier in Switzerland acts as a bridge, translating these artistic whispers into the tangible beauty of hand-knotted wool, guided by the skilled hands of our master weavers in Iran. Crucially, we honour the individual artistry each weaver brings to the loom – their unique touch imbues every piece with an unrepeatable soul. We often encourage a dance between our initial framework and their spontaneous expression; it’s in that very improvisation that the truest magic is born.”

3. How does Zollanvari support and preserve the cultural identity and craftsmanship of the nomadic and tribal weavers you work with?

“For Zollanvari, our role extends far beyond that of mere producers; we are deeply invested in the stewardship of a living cultural heritage. Our weavers, many hailing from the esteemed Ghashgha’i and other nomadic or semi-nomadic tribes, are the guardians of ancient weaving traditions. We are committed to providing them with consistent, fairly compensated work that empowers them to remain connected to their ancestral lands and sustain their unique cultural identity. Our support is holistic: beyond the vital craft itself, we actively nurture these communities through initiatives that strengthen their social fabric.

Over the years, we’ve been privileged to support the building of schools, the creation of vital infrastructure like roads in remote areas, and even the spirited Ghashgha’i football team – a symbol of their collective pride and unity. Recognising the unique challenges of nomadic life, we also fund mobile schools that journey with migrating families, ensuring education doesn’t necessitate abandoning their traditions. Furthermore, we champion young artists within these communities, fostering the blossoming of new creative voices. For us, preserving this extraordinary craft means empowering the remarkable people who bring it to life – socially, economically, and with unwavering cultural respect.”

4. What role do sustainability and ethical sourcing play in your production chain, especially given the increasing demand for environmentally responsible products?

“Sustainability isn’t a trend for us; it’s woven into the very essence of Zollanvari. Our rugs begin with the touch of nature itself – hand-spun wool sourced locally from sheep that graze freely in the pristine highland pastures. We are steadfast in our commitment to 100% natural vegetable dyes, eschewing any harsh chemicals. Our entire process, from the gentle spinning of the yarn to the final finishing touches, is a testament to human artistry, resulting in a remarkably low environmental footprint.

Equally vital is our unwavering commitment to ethical practices: fair wages that honour their skill, safe and respectful working conditions, and enduring, meaningful relationships with our artisan partners are not just principles – they are the bedrock of Zollanvari.”

5. Zollanvari has a global presence—how do you adapt your product offerings or marketing strategies for different international markets?

“While the soul of Zollanvari – our dedication to exceptional artistry and heritage – remains constant across the globe, we understand that beauty speaks different dialects. We thoughtfully tailor our approach to resonate with the unique aesthetic and cultural nuances of each region.

In the discerning markets of East Asia, for instance, there’s a profound appreciation for intricate detail, the evocative language of tribal symbolism, and even the playful charm of certain Gabbeh and animal-motif designs. Conversely, in the design capitals of Europe, particularly France, Germany, and Switzerland, we often find interior designers and galleries drawn to bold artistic statements and the elegant simplicity of contemporary minimalism, which we address through carefully curated selections and dynamic design collaborations. Our marketing narratives and the voices of our local representatives adapt in tandem, always striving to cultivate relationships built on cultural understanding and a shared appreciation for enduring beauty.”

6. Looking ahead, what are your strategic goals for growth? Are there new markets, collaborations, or digital innovations you’re currently pursuing?

“Our vision for the future of Zollanvari is one of deepening our roots in the vibrant design landscapes of Europe, fostering a stronger network of passionate representatives in key cities. We are also drawn to the exciting potential of emerging markets in Eastern Europe, the serene beauty of Scandinavia, and the rich artistic traditions of the Middle East.

While our tactile art finds its truest expression beyond the digital realm, we recognize the power of online storytelling and are strategically enhancing our digital presence to amplify our brand narrative and connect with a wider audience. Our ultimate aspiration is to be recognized not simply as a creator of exquisite carpets, but as a globally revered purveyor of luxury design – a name synonymous with artistry, heritage, and enduring beauty.”
