Iran continues to export its world-renowned hand-woven carpets to select international markets despite enduring sanctions and global economic challenges. According to Morteza Aqamiri, a senior industry representative, Iranian carpets have found their way to six key destinations in recent years — including the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Britain, Germany, Pakistan, and several other countries.
“Despite the challenges of sanctions and fluctuations in the global market, Iran’s hand-woven carpet exports in recent years have been to six countries,” Aqamiri told the ANA News Agency. “The Iranian carpet industry continues to produce the highest quality hand-woven carpets in the world, and efforts are ongoing to preserve and expand the position of this cultural heritage in international markets,” he added.
Persian Carpets: A Timeless Symbol of Iranian Art
Persian carpets, often described as the crown jewel of Iranian craftsmanship, are celebrated for their intricate patterns, vivid colors, and exceptional quality. For centuries, they have represented the pinnacle of Iran’s artistic and cultural identity, adorning homes, palaces, and galleries worldwide.
Iran once held a dominant share of the global hand-woven carpet market, with official records showing exports exceeding $1 billion in the 1990s, a figure that remained steady into the early 2010s.
Export Decline Amid Sanctions
In recent years, however, exports have dropped to historic lows, largely due to U.S. sanctions and restrictive government policies requiring exporters to repatriate their foreign currency earnings. These measures have significantly affected the industry’s ability to maintain its traditional export networks.
Despite these obstacles, Iranian artisans and exporters remain determined to keep the country’s carpet legacy alive, exploring new markets and digital platforms to reach global buyers. As efforts continue to revitalize production, marketing, and international partnerships, the enduring appeal of Persian carpets remains a beacon of Iran’s cultural resilience and artistic excellence.
