Iran’s Handmade Carpet Exports See First Growth in Two Decades

After nearly 20 years of continuous decline, Iran’s handmade carpet industry is showing signs of recovery, with exports increasing by almost 4% in value during the past Iranian calendar year ending on March 20.

According to Zahra Kamani, Head of the Iran National Carpet Centre, the country exported approximately US$39.7 million worth of handmade carpets in 2023–2024. Iranian carpets were shipped to 65 countries, with the United Arab Emirates and China ranking among the top importers.

Kamani noted that this modest but significant rebound reflects renewed international interest in Persian carpets—long regarded as a cultural treasure and symbol of Iranian craftsmanship.

To build on this momentum, the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade has partnered with the Iran National Carpet Centre to launch a strategic initiative focused on strengthening the global reputation of Persian handmade carpets. The program includes financial support mechanisms, improved access to banking services, and coordinated efforts across relevant organisations.

“The initiative aims to enhance the global standing of handmade carpets,” Kamani stated. “With synergy in monetary and banking systems and supportive measures, further growth in exports is anticipated.”

Persian carpets, known for their intricate designs, rich history, and exceptional quality, have long been a hallmark of Iran’s cultural exports. This recent growth could mark a turning point for an industry deeply affected by economic sanctions, shifting global markets, and changing consumer preferences.

Industry experts believe that with the right support and strategic marketing, Iran’s handmade carpet sector could reclaim a stronger position in the international luxury and home décor markets.
