The Hague — A new exhibition titled “Splendid Azerbaijani Carpets: Learning through Art” has opened at The Hague City Hall, offering Dutch audiences a vibrant introduction to Azerbaijan’s centuries-old carpet weaving tradition. The exhibition is jointly organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the Netherlands and Azerkhalcha OJSC.
The opening ceremony drew a distinguished audience, including Dutch city officials, representatives from state institutions, the diplomatic corps, international organizations, and members of the cultural, academic, and Azerbaijani diaspora communities.
In his remarks, Azerbaijani Ambassador Mammad Ahmadzade noted that the exhibition is part of a series of global events celebrating the 15th anniversary of Azerbaijani carpet weaving’s recognition by UNESCO as an element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. He emphasized the historical and artistic significance of Azerbaijani carpets and highlighted their presence in works by prominent Dutch painters like Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling, underscoring centuries-old artistic connections between the two cultures.
Deputy Mayor of The Hague, Nur Icar, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to host the exhibition, reinforcing the city’s commitment to cultural diversity and international dialogue.
Emin Mammadov, Chairman of Azerkhalcha OJSC, emphasized the exhibition’s role in strengthening cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Azerbaijan and the Netherlands.
The event concluded with a spirited performance by the “Kharibulbul” dance group, showcasing traditional Azerbaijani music and dance.
Running for one month, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the artistry, symbolism, and history behind Azerbaijani carpets, and serves as a meaningful bridge between the cultural heritages of Azerbaijan and the Netherlands.
