Herat Sees Strong Growth in Handmade Carpet Exports

The western province of Herat has reported a significant rise in handmade carpet exports this year, reflecting renewed momentum in Afghanistan’s traditional craft sector. According to the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Investment, carpets worth over $270,000 have been exported to international markets so far in 2025 — up from $155,000 last year, marking an increase of more than $116,000.

Exports to Key Global Markets

Yousuf Amin, Executive Director of the Chamber, noted that the bulk of these exports were destined for Australia, Germany, and Austria, highlighting the growing global appreciation for Afghan craftsmanship. “The rise in export value demonstrates both the resilience of local producers and the strong international demand for Herat’s handmade carpets,” Amin said.

Expanding International Presence

Local authorities have expressed optimism about the sector’s performance and pledged continued support to artisans and exporters. Mohammad Yousuf Syedi, spokesperson for the Herat Governor’s Office, confirmed that the administration is collaborating with the private sector and the Chamber of Commerce to streamline export processes and enhance participation in international exhibitions.

“Our goal is to promote Herat’s carpets on the global stage and ensure our artisans gain greater market access,” Syedi said.

Cultural and Economic Heritage

Afghanistan’s handmade carpets remain one of the country’s most valuable cultural and economic exports, celebrated for their intricate designs, natural dyes, and enduring quality. Herat, long regarded as a major production center, continues to play a vital role in sustaining this centuries-old art form — helping preserve traditional craftsmanship while contributing to the region’s economic stability.
