Heritage-Rich Indian Carpets Set to Gain from India–EU Free Trade Agreement: CEPC

India’s handmade carpet and rug industry is poised for renewed growth in Europe following the conclusion of the India–European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA), according to the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC). The council described the agreement as a landmark development that opens preferential access to one of the world’s largest and most quality-driven consumer markets.

The FTA places strong emphasis on labour-intensive sectors, including handmade carpets, rugs, handicrafts, and textile products. For India’s carpet exporters, the removal of tariff barriers is expected to significantly enhance price competitiveness in the EU, where duties previously limited export volumes and constrained positioning in higher-value segments.

Preferential Access Strengthens Traditional Carpet Clusters

India’s handmade carpet sector—anchored in heritage-rich clusters such as Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh; Panipat in Haryana; Jaipur and Bikaner in Rajasthan; and Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir—has demonstrated resilience despite prolonged global market headwinds. With carpets now included under preferential trade access, exporters anticipate stronger penetration into European markets and a revival in demand across these production hubs.

CEPC emphasized that the benefits of the FTA will not be limited to large exporters. Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and rural artisan units involved in weaving and finishing are also expected to gain from easier access to EU buyers. Improved competitiveness is likely to strengthen integration with European supply chains while supporting employment generation, particularly for women and youth in traditional carpet-making regions.

The council further highlighted that Indian handmade carpets, known for their craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and design depth, are well positioned to meet rising demand in premium home décor and luxury interior segments across Europe. As European consumers increasingly seek authenticity, sustainability, and artisanal value, CEPC believes the India–EU FTA could serve as a catalyst for long-term growth and global repositioning of Indian carpets in the high-end interiors market.
